Exploring the mines
Mount Amiata, an extinct volcano nestled between the Val d’Orcia and the Maremma, is a mountain steeped in history, mystery, and mercury. We invite you to uncover the fascinating and sometimes mysterious history of mercury and its mineral, cinnabar, by visiting the restored mines that once thrived here. Among the must-see sites are the Abbadia San Salvatore mine, which houses a museum and offers guided tours of its galleries from June 15th to November 1st, as well as on holidays (mornings from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, afternoons from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM). Another intriguing stop is the Cornacchino mine in Castell’Azzara, where you can explore narrow corridors filled with a haunting, dark allure.
